紫外線吸收劑常與其他光穩定劑搭配廣泛用于塑料中，尤其是瓶、膜類。應根據目標物的種類、預期使用壽命和對紫外線的敏感度來選用不同種類的紫外線吸收劑。紫外線吸收劑，例如苯甲酮類，是通過吸收紫外線能量和抑制自由基形成來起作用的。氧化過程是指一種充當氧化劑的化學物質從還原劑得到電子的過程，聚合物環境下這個過程會產生自由基。這些自由基會引發連鎖反應，破壞聚合物結構。
